Is it just me or has anyone else’s week been completely insane? The week after Eid I was suddenly booked solid with client projects. Yes, that’s a good thing, but I didn’t plan for it well. The summer months are usually slower in my line of work, and business typically picks up after Labor Day. On top of that, my dear husband brought more of our stuff (a lot of stuff he could have simply given away or donated *sigh*) with him in a truck when he arrived in town – just in time to chaperone my daughter’s 5th grade out of town camping trip. Naturally my three boys were left sulking over their father and sister’s impending camping adventure, so I impetuously decided to carve out quality time for some mother and son fun.
Several things were put on the backburner as a result, and I’m now playing serious catch up. It was more than worth it – my children are growing up so fast, and my family will always take precedence. Such is life when you work at home.
I also took another important step in my business this week. I signed up for a special program that will earn me another resume writing certification. The program is eight weeks long, rigorous, and to be perfectly honest I wasn’t initially comfortable about the price. I’d been going back and forth for weeks over whether or not to sign up. After researching what others were saying about it, considering how I’ll benefit, and still more back and forth over it, I decided to bite the bullet and sign up.
I’m a big advocate of continued learning. I believe if you’re going to go into business, you should strive to be the best you can at what you do. I’m telling you from experience, it’s what separates those whose home businesses will continue to flourish and grow from those who will stagnate or fizzle and burn out. Business today is so affected by emerging technology and global competition. You can’t afford to fall behind.
While I don’t believe this should scare sisters away from starting their own businesses, it’s important to recognize now more than ever you have to be able to deliver quality products and services to your customers/clients. Client retention is the driving force of business. Your ability to provide a quality product or service is one key component that keeps the majority of customers returning to do business with you.
Making sure you stay current with technology, trends in your industry and specific skills sometimes involves making a financial investment with the understanding that it will pay off in the future. The investment can be a updating a computer, printer or some other equipment. It might be purchasing special software or resource materials. You may take a special class, seminar or training; or you may decide to hire a coach or consultant. When you prioritize learning, you keep your business fresh and lay the foundation for continued business growth. It also solidifies your position as a credible expert in your field which makes it easier to earn your customers’ trust.
Do you regularly participate in training or courses for your business? Do you plan to invest in any classes, webinars, coaching or other educational/training opportunities in the near future?
