I absolutely adore start-up business stories. There’s something exciting about taking a business idea from the conception phase to actually selling your product or service. Hijab Design Studio is a perfect example of a promising start-up business with an even more promising future, insha’Allah.
I “met” Mifrah, the owner of Hijab Design Studio on Twitter a couple of weeks ago (a wonderful networking tool for Muslimah-owned businesses by the way). She was promoting her products and posted a Facebook link sharing images of her custom tailored designs and I was impressed. Muslimahs Working at Home is the perfect place to shout out a new Muslimah-owned start up business!
Mifrah has a really interesting story. She and best friend and business partner, Anisa Khan, both worked as college lecturers. While working outside of the home, Mifrah needed clothing that was both modest and stylish. She always had a passion for dress design even though she pursued the path of formal academics. She frequently had garments tailored to her tastes and needs.
After having a baby last year, Mifrah decided to take extended time off from work. That’s when she and partner Anisa began seriously considering work at home options. They decided to focus on selling hijabs and jilbabs.
They started out small and introduced their home business to their community in November 2010 by holding a sort of “grand opening sale” right in her living room. They spread the word about the event by printing up flyers and pamphlets and passing them out to sisters during halaqas. The initial response to their business was very encouraging. Hijab Design Studio has even been mentioned on a couple of blogs.
Right now Hijab Design Studio is busy working on their pre-Ramadhan collection. They are serious about customer satisfaction and take many of their design cues based on feedback from their customers.
Mifrah and Anisa are working on developing an e-commerce website that will allow customers from anywhere in the world to buy their merchandise, but for now you can access their designs through the Hijab Design Studio Facebook link at: www.facebook.com/hijabdesignstudio. You can also follow them on Twitter to find out more about their product line, sales and special promotions at @hijabstudio.
Muslimahs Working at Home was created to provide women with a financial alternative to earning an income outside of the home. Our objective is to share resources and tools needed to operate a successful, home-based business

Jazakallah Khair Umm Yusuf!
