Last Friday American Muslim Mom’s post “Is a MBA Necessary for an Online Business Owner? Blogger? Social Media Expert?” sparked an interesting conversation among the comments. Ponn Sabra, the blog’s founder, stated that a Master’s degree can be beneficial for some entrepreneurial pursuits. As a content marketing consultant and web writer, I have to admit my Bachelor’s degree has worked in my favor with some clients. I can certainly see how a Master’s degree might give a business owner credibility and make it easier for customers/clients to view her as an expert in her niche or industry. Educational, financial and government industries are just a few examples. But it’s not a necessity for all business ventures.
There are plenty of examples of successful entrepreneurs who own thriving, growing businesses without having earned a Bachelor’s, let alone a Master’s degree. There are some skills that don’t require the pursuit of a degree as a confirmation of one’s ability. That’s the beauty of small business – it’s something everyone can have a chance to build something from the ground up into something successful.
Although I did not pursue a Master’s degree myself, I am an advocate of continuing education. My mother had a Master’s degree in education. I push my children scholastically, but try to reign myself in enough to want their happiness over guilting them into earning a PhD they may have no real interest in pursuing. I want them to do as our Prophet (saw) has advised in the ahadith and “seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave.”
Do you believe your level of education has any effect on your success as a home business owner?
Muslimahs Working at Home was created to provide women with an alternative to earning an income outside of the home. Our objective is to share resources and tools necessary to operate a successful, profitable, home-based business.
