One of the biggest benefits of running a home-based business is being able to operate on a flexible schedule so you can earn an income and also be available for your children. I love being able to pick my children up from school or soccer practice, or nursed them at home when they’re sick without worrying about my job or a demanding, unyielding boss (been there, done that).
Ironically working around family can be one of the biggest challenges when you work from home. Of course the challenges you deal with working around a newborn’s schedule are different from those involving toddlers or teens. Finding the right rhythm that allows your business to peacefully coexist with your work can involve a bit of trial and error, but here are a few tips that might help:
Invest in Baby Gates and Stimulating Toys
When I first began working from home, I had a three year old and one year old twins. I quickly realized that I needed to move my computer and desk from the peaceful alcove of my bedroom into a corner in my living room so I could constantly monitor my little people while working. I don’t think I would have survived without baby gates locked into doorways preventing my curious little ones from wondering around the house unsupervised. That piece of mind was precious indeed.
Stimulating toys and educational videos were also helpful. Some of their favorite activities during that time included jumbo LEGO blocks, age appropriate puzzles and PBS. I also found it very beneficial to get everyone outside at least once a day for fresh air and outdoor fun.
Schedule Calls with Clients During After Hours or When Spouse/Babysitter Can Watch the Kids
In the beginning of my business, I tried making client calls during the day with my children underfoot. I’d try sneaking off to the kitchen to make and take calls. I’d try sneaking off to the bedroom. They would follow me. I’d sneak off into a closet. I’d try slipping into a dark, quiet closet. You get the idea.
I finally decided to take advantage of my flexible work at home schedule and make my calls in the evening when my husband was home and able to watch the kids. I can give clients my full attention during phone conversations or online chats when there are no distractions.
Communicate Using Instant Messaging/Chat Software for Added Convenience
The beauty of technology is that it allows me to rarely leave the comfort of my home office to service my clients. I don’t have to spend lots of time on the phone. I work with busy clients who prefer using Skype and other IM platforms to keep in touch while working on time sensitive projects.
Don’t Feel Obligated to Answer Every Call
Most of the time email is a sufficient method of communication. However, there are times when phone calls are necessary. Revisions on a tight deadline or complex instructions (making sure we are on the same page) are two instances where phone calls are deemed necessary in my book. I usually avoid them because too often conversations get extended beyond the necessary topic of discussion and that can take up unnecessary time. I have a specified time blocked out for answering/returning phone calls otherwise my voicemail collects messages during that time.
Phone calls can easily because “time sucks” so I prefer to schedule client calls ahead of time. This helps me maintain momentum and productively.
Consider Using a Cell Phone for Your Business
I choose to use a cell phone instead of getting a separate landline. Of course you must consider the type of business you’re running. A cell phone works best for me because it goes where I go. If I’m outdoors during the kid’s soccer practice in the doctor’s waiting room or standing in line at the post office, I can accept calls or check my voicemail with ease. Investing in a smartphone can provide even more remote control of your business operations allowing you to do things like check and send emails and text documents.
